My work combines realism with abstraction and is inspired by collage, Surrealism, and the people in my life. Using collage as a reference for my paintings, I find that the rearrangement of objects, locations, and figures into new environments often creates surreal imagery that challenges common perspectives. By removing something from its normal environment and juxtaposing it with other removed objects, I am able to create compositions that generate illusions and question everyday normalcy. While this sometimes creates strange and even deceptive depictions of the world, I think it is interesting to explore how small altercations and rearrangements to familiar things suddenly makes them unfamiliar. Why do normal things become strange once they are placed outside of what is taught? Turning something normal into something strange confronts the traditional ways reality is perceived, and I try to depict images that provoke thought about what makes something normal vs. unusual.
